Migraine attacks can cause significant pain for hours to days and be so severe that all you can think about is finding a dark, quiet place to lie down.
Some migraines are preceded or accompanied by sensory warning symptoms, such as flashes of light, blind spots, or tingling in your arm or leg.
CAUSES:
Migraines may be caused by changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway.
Imbalances in brain chemicals- including serotonin, which help regulate pain in your nervous system.
- FOODS - Aged cheeses, salty foods and processed foods may trigger migraines. Skipping meals or fasting also can trigger attacks.
- FOOD ADDITIVES - The sweetener aspartame and the preservative monosodium glutamate, found in many foods, may trigger migraines.
- DRINKS - Alcohol, specially wine, and highly caffeinated beverages may trigger migraines.
- STRESS - Stress at work or home can cause migraines.
- SENSORY STIMULI - Bright light and sun glare can induce migraines, as can loud sounds. Unusual smells – including perfume, paint thinner, second hand smoke and others – can trigger migraines in some people.
- CHANGES IN WAKE – sleep pattern. Missing sleep or getting too much sleep may trigger migraines in some people, as can jet lag.
- CHANGES IN THE ENVIRONMENT - A change of weather or barometric pressure can prompt a migraine.
LIFESTYLE AND HOME REMEDIES:
Self-care measures can help ease the pain of a migraine headache.
Try muscle relaxation exercises. Relaxation may help ease the pain of a migraine headache.
- Relaxation techniques may include progressive muscle relaxation, meditation or yoga.
- Get enough sleep, but don’t oversleep. Get an adequate amount of sleep each night.
- Rest and relax. If possible, rest in a dark, quiet room when you feel a headache coming on. Place an icepack wrapped in a cloth on the back of your neck and apply gentle pressure to painful areas of neck.
Alternative medicine nontraditional therapies may be helpful if you have chronic migraine pain:
- ACUPUNCTURE - In this treatment, a practitioner inserts many thin, disposable needles into several areas of your skin at defined points. Clinical trials have found that acupuncture may be helpful for headache pain.
- MESSAGE THERAPY - Massage therapy may help reduce the frequency of migraines.
HERBS, VITAMINS AND MINERALS.
- A high dose of riboflavin (vitamin B-2) also may prevent migraines or reduce the frequency of headaches. Whole cereals, legumes, facts, oil seeds, nuts and leafy vegetable are good sources while milled cereal and flours, roots and tubers and other vegetables are fair sources.
- Due to low magnesium levels in some people with migraines, magnesium supplements have been used to treat migraines, red grapes, flax seeds, rajgira (royal grain) are good source of magnesium.
